Teasing...adding insult to injury!
“When my daughter does go to school the other kids tease her. It makes me crazy! What can I do to help her cope and also educate the teachers and the other students?”
When your child returns to school after an illness or injury, it might help to arrange for a professional to visit the school and help with her reintegration. This professional could be a social worker, nurse practitioner, child life specialist, school reentry person, hospital school teacher, or anyone else from the hospital.
He or she should be familiar with your child, her illness, and any cognitive/academic effects from her illness. This specialist could make an age-appropriate presentation to your child’s class about the illness, side effects, change in appearance, etc. The presentation might also include ideas about how to “be a good friend” and how to help a friend if she is being teased outside of class. Also, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have an excellent video called, “Why Charlie Brown, Why?” This video discusses cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, hair loss, teasing, and the fear of dying from or catching cancer. It can be obtained by calling the local chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There are also many good books about children and cancer that can be read to the class.
